How do you become a yoga and or pilates instructor?
If you were to open your own studio where you taught yoga and or pilates, are there any special courses or credentials that you need to teach either of those in Ontario.
I think it would be really awesome to open my own yoga studio, I just don’t know where to start. Helpful advice would be great!
Answer: Start by taking yoga or pilates classes. Better yet, take both!
Yoga and pilates isn’t something you can really learn well by watching a DVD or reading a book. You need to get out and take classes. Learn by doing. Master the basics. This will be your foundation to grow on.
Many YMCA’s give yoga or pilates classes. If they don’t in your area, check around, especially at the local gyms.
Once you taken classes for a while and you have perfected the moves and poses, buy Video’s and books to learn new moves and poses. This will help you develop into a true Master. It will also help you decide which type of Yoga you want to teach. There are many types, so you should focus on becoming proficient in just a few at first.
Next, be on the lookout for Yoga and Pilate workshops in your area or driving distance away. These will continue to help you grow as a Yoga or Pilates teacher.
Make sure you learn the necessary steps for certification as a yoga or pilates instructor in your area. Certification requirements for yoga instructors vary from state to state, so make sure you’re clear on what steps you need to take to achieve your goal.
Networking with other Instructors will help you find out what is required. Don’t be surprised if local instructors don’t want to help you. They may see you as a threat. If that’s the case, just go outside your area and ask other Instructors what you need to do in order to become a certified yoga or pilates instructor.
