If you live in Texas, and are planning on entering this profession, you will need to know exactly how to become a teacher in Texas. The following career advice will help you properly plan your path.

The main requirement is that you have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. An academic major, as well as teaching training courses will be required. There is one exception to this. That being reserved for individuals that wish to only teach certain courses. Career certification will still be required to apply to these positions, but a degree may not be necessary.

Non-traditional teacher training for those that wish to teach a trade includes skills tests, attending various seminars, and teacher training. You may also be required to serve as an aid to a current teacher in the classroom setting.

All that wish to become a teacher in Texas will be required to go through teacher training classes. These are offered at many locations such as colleges, specific teacher training facilities, and are often offered within the school district itself.

Teacher certification will be necessary. This certification will be specific to the grade you want to teach, as well as the subject. What certification tests you will need to take varies. Some grade levels and subjects only require a few, while others require several. Check with your local school district to find out which specific certification tests will be required.

If you have not already received a degree, you will be able to complete all of your training classes, and take the required certification tests while you are still in school. This is the easiest method, but those that already have a degree should not be discouraged. It will merely require a little more effort on your part.

If you currently are certified to teach in another state, and wish to teach in Texas, you will only be required to take the Texas certification exam. Once this is passed, you will be able to immediately seek employment within any of the Texas school districts. Under some circumstances, the certification test you took in your home state may be considered similar enough to the Texas test version that a new test will not be required. The Texas school system keeps a current list of tests from other states that are similar enough to be acceptable.

Once you are certified to teach in Texas, you will be required to take ongoing development classes. These classes will be required to keep your teaching license current. These classes are quite beneficial, as they help teachers keep up with the latest developments in the education field, and teach new teaching strategies that will be effective in propelling your students to even greater heights.

Job opportunities abound in the Texas school districts. Qualified individuals will find job placement easy. Learning how to become a teacher in Texas was your first step. From here you will be able to start your path to joining other individuals that are changing the lives of children on a daily basis.

Along with high intelligence, much endurance is needed to get through all the classes and requirements that are necessary. After all, an apt student will probably become an apt teacher. This career advice will cover some straightforward information about how to become a teacher in the U.S. Words will not be minced and the information given may be discouraging. However, for people truly serious about becoming educators, this challenging process is very doable.

Before delving into any of the necessary education and legal matters, a potential teacher ought to ask him or herself a serious, introspective question: “Why do I want to teach?” If the reason is because of a passion for educating children, this is a positive sign. However, some people find that they are afraid of the adult world. This is not the case for most people, but it is a common bad reason for wishing to teach. It is extremely important for an aspiring educator to know exactly what his or her goals are for the career path. Otherwise, he or she can anticipate years of futile energy and mountains of wasted money. After all, the annual salary of a beginning teacher is often less than $30,000.

Requirements To Become A Teacher

First, the aspiring teacher must obtain a bachelor’s degree, preferably in the subject matter that he or she would like to teach. Earning good grades is vital, because next comes graduate school. Most teachers nowadays need a master’s degree in order to be competitive candidates in the field. Getting into graduate school is difficult for anyone, and almost impossible for candidates with bad undergraduate marks. The third step is becoming certified as a teacher. Different states have different regulations for this certification, so the aspiring educator should know the state in which he or she wishes to work. Certification involves student teaching and passing a difficult standardized exam. Despite all of this, as the next paragraph will show, good grades are not everything.

Not only must the teaching candidate undergo the aforementioned rigorous academic training, he or she must jump through legal hoops as well. Aside from minor traffic violations, any kind of a tarnish on a person’s criminal record is a big setback for someone trying to get a teaching job. (Of course, any kind of child abuse or neglect is a definite way never to get a job with children.) Imagine that a school is viewing two candidates for a job. Person A has perfect grades but Person B does not. However, Person A was charged with being drunk in public during his freshman year of college. Person B has a clean record. The school administrators will likely choose Person B despite imperfect test scores. This is a sound example of why behavior is just as significant, if not more significant, than a flawless transcript. Anyone who has already mottled his or her record ought to discuss the matter with an academic adviser. As upsetting as it may be, the best option might be to choose a different career path.

Becoming a teacher in the United States is a very challenging path. Some States have more requirements than others. For example, for those who want to become a teacher in Texas, you’ll have more requirements than those in a state like North Dakota. It should be reserved for people who love children and are serious about educating upcoming generations. Anyone who is uncertain about the legitimacy of his or her reasoning for wanting to teach ought to take a step backward and reconsider. In addition, as unfortunate as it is, those with criminal records may want to reevaluate their career choice. However, with the right attitude and aptitude, aspiring teachers can proudly walk the college graduation aisle, then hit the job market with confidence.

Question: I want to teach middle school. I need to know what classes in college do you need to take?

Answer: If you already have a degree then you do a PGCE (postrad course) this takes 1 year on your way to become a teacher.

If you have not yet completed a degree then you could study a relevant subject e.g. maths, English etc, then complete a PGCE or alternatively you could study an Education related degree for primary school which would take three years then you would be fully qualified so to summarise:

3 year degree (e.g English) + postgraduate PGCE; or
3 Degree in Education

The former offers more versatility if you were tempted to change career

But at the very least, you should have a college diploma. basically this is four years.

You will also need a number of credits in education to fulfill state requirements. If you teach in a middle or high school also needed will be a number of credits in the subject matter that you wish to teach.

The amount of time that will take is dependent upon how you will be able to fit these courses into you BA degree and the qualifications for your particular state.

Some states will also require a masters degree or a certain number of graduate credits. Check with your school counselor or the School Board in your state for the requirements.

I would say that for most people it would be at least 5 years beyond high school.

Question: When I grow up I really want to be a preschool teacher but I dnt know what to study. But I Do know I have to do 3 years at a University according to my school’s counseler.

Answer: The traditional route to becoming a public school teacher involves completing a bachelor’s degree from a teacher education program and then obtaining a license. However, most States now offer alternative routes to licensure for those who have a college degree in other fields. Private school teachers do not have to be licensed but still need a bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree may not be needed by preschool teachers and vocational education teachers, who need experience in their field rather than a specific degree.

Education and training. Traditional education programs for kindergarten and elementary school teachers include courses designed specifically for those preparing to teach. Most programs require students to perform a student-teaching internship. Graduation from an accredited program is not necessary to become a teacher, but it may make fulfilling licensure requirements easier.

Many States now offer professional development schools, which are partnerships between universities and elementary or secondary schools. Students enter these 1-year programs after completion of their bachelor’s degree. All 50 States and the District of Columbia require public school teachers to be licensed. Licensure is not required for teachers in most private schools.

All States require general education teachers to have a bachelor’s degree and to have completed an approved teacher training program with a prescribed number of subject and education credits, as well as supervised practice teaching.

Expect to be able to pass a background check. Many states now require a thorough background check of any public school teacher.

Licensing requirements for preschool teachers also vary by State. Requirements for public preschool teachers are generally more stringent than those for private preschool teachers. Some States require a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, while others require an associate’s degree, and still others require certification by a nationally recognized authority. The Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, the most common type of certification, requires a mix of classroom training and experience working with children, along with an independent assessment of the teacher’s competence.

Private schools are generally exempt from meeting State licensing standards. For secondary school teacher jobs, they prefer candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in the subject they intend to teach, or in childhood education for preschool teachers.

How Do I Become A Teacher

To become a Teacher, a person should check with their States licensing board. Many times this is the Board of Education in each state. In some states it will be a different agency that handles the licensing of Teachers.

There are some general guidelines for becoming a Teacher. Some of these guidelines are:

Many States require some type of College degree

Other States require a Teaching Certificate

Some States may require both

A background check is also routine with many States these days

How Do I Prepare To Become A Teacher

Before going into the Teaching field, you should sit down and have a good long soul search. The reason behind this is too determine what area of Teaching you want to teach in. Some teachers just go blindly into teaching and the first thing you know, they’re teaching a High School English class wishing they were teaching Kindergarteners! Learning how to become a teacher is the easy part, actually doing it is the hard part.

This is really one of those career fields you enter because you love the work, not because of the money. To be enjoyable, you need to decide early on which field you want to enter and work at becoming proficient in that field.

If you want to teach Speech classes, then find out which certificates the top Speech Teachers in your area obtain and work toward that. If you enjoy working with older Kids, for goodness sakes don’t take on a Kindergarten class!

Now I Have My Degree or Certificate, What Next?

Once you’ve received your education, and sometimes you can do this while you’re in College, you’ll be required to spend some time training with experienced Teachers. You may also be required to take advanced courses depending on what you want to teach, Special Ed for example.

In some instance such as VoTech fields, you may not be required to have a College degree. Even at some VoTech schools, the instructors may only be required to have a Teaching Certificate which can be easily obtained in most circumstances.

Each State has their own requirements. For example, if you want to learn how to become a teacher in Texas, then there are are more guidelines than other States.

Teachers should have good communication skills as this will be the deciding factor on whether or not you’re a good Teacher. Obviously Teacher’s must interact with their Students. Be it a class of 1st Graders or a class of soon-to-be mechanics, you must have the ability to interact and communicate effectively with your Students.

How Much Does A Teacher Make

Once again, this varies with the State you’re teaching in as well as the District. The type of teaching you do may also play a role in the wages you earn.

Salaries vary greatly. According to the U.S. Government, the lowest paid Teachers in 2004 started at less than $25,000 while the upper 10% made over $65,000. A huge difference in anyones book! It’s not uncommon for Teachers to have side jobs during the School Year and full time jobs during the Summer when School is out.

From what I’ve been told, expect to start out around $25 to $30 thousand per year as a Teacher. Of course, if your specialty is something like teaching a foreign language, Math or Science, you can expect to boost that starting pay on up.

What Is The Job Outlook For Becoming A Teacher

Partly due to low starting wages and partly due to a booming population, Teachers are in high demand and a Teacher with good credentials should not have a problem finding work. The problem may be finding a salary you can live on!

The long term outlook also looks good to excellent for anyone with a teaching degree. Schools from the lowest Public schools to the high end Private schools are having a hard time attracting and keeping qualified Teachers.

Teachers are in short demand in the Math and Science fields. Should you go into either one of those fields, you just may find yourself being the object of a bidding war! The cities are especially hard at finding and recruiting good teachers in these areas.

Probably the brightest teaching futures are those of the Teachers who speak a foreign language. Here in the U.S., teachers who speak Spanish and can Teach English as a 2nd language are always in a very high demand! As the Spanish population in the U.S. Increases, this demand will only grow by leaps and bounds.

Teaching kids today that will become tomorrow’s leaders is an honorable task. Sadly, our society does not pay these great people the money that they should be getting. If you go into the Teaching field, it will be because you have a passion for it, not that you’ll be getting rich!
